When you buy local flowers, you have a choice of much more than typical florist or supermarket flowers. Some of these flowers may be unfamiliar, and some star for only a brief time during the season. But without these character actors, your bouquet will not shine.
Allium aka flowering onion. Although it's an onion, the flowers smell like honey! Leave it to dry in the vase and you'll get a little universe of shooting stars. Comes in a range from light to deep purple, white, and pink. Available from late April to mid- May.
Crocosmia Hot red-orange tubular flowers in sprays. Avaialable July.
Baptisia, aka false indigo. The flowers open from the bottom to the top of the stem. Also comes in yellow. Available for a week or two in early May.
